Chapter Eleven

“Aidan, where have you gone? To Siberia?”

His sister almost sounded concerned. Six days in with Cara—and now Tobias, Marlena, and the children—and he hadn’t bothered calling anyone to come rescue him.

“I told you, Annabelle, I’m stuck here at the ranch in this snow and ice.”

“Aren’t you lonely?” she asked, her tone so full of giddy he wanted to throw up.

“I’m not lonely.” And he certainly wasn’t alone.

Shutting the office door so she wouldn’t hear the pitter-patter of little feet or the throaty Italian voice of Cara Lamon, Aidan rubbed his eyes. “I’ve been working from home, monitoring the build site. But with this weather, things have grinded to a halt.”

“The whole city has grinded to a halt,” Annabelle replied. “I’m worried about the wedding.”

Aidan wasn’t worried. “You know Nico and Eleanor. They’ll get married if they have to do it inside Castle Department Store.”

“Perish the thought,” his dramatic sister said. “We’ve worked too hard to set up the perfect venue.”

“In December, in the middle of winter.”

“But you and I both know December in Dallas is usually mild compared to other parts of the country. Besides, the park is their special place.”

“Tell that to the weatherman,” he retorted, staring out at the patches of snow still left in the yard.

Annabelle changed the subject. “So, Johnny says you two installed a new security system at the ranch. How’s that working?”

“We still have some kinks in the system.” Cara and her hammer came to mind.

“But you’ll be able to get into town for the wedding, right?”

“That’s the plan. I’ll do my part as one of the groomsmen, under duress, of course. The roads are beginning to clear.” Then he asked, “Where are you?”

“I’m at the estate house for now. Johnny is at his house, but he’s keeping tabs on the store, of course.”

“Is it shut down?”

“Unfortunately, since downtown Dallas looks like a ghost town. We’re losing Christmas shopping days, but we’ll make it up to our customers when this weather clears.”

“You sound like a true Castle now, little sister.”

“I feel like a true Castle,” she admitted. “It’s a good feeling. The Lone Star store in doing well beyond expectations, and I’m enjoying training the visual merchandising staff. Kimmie is going to make a great manager one day.”

“Kimmie, the young girl you took under your wing?”

“Yes. In other words, me at that age.”

Glad that his sister was on the right track and the fast track, Aidan wondered what would have happened to them if Eleanor had never come home.

He didn’t want to think about that. “It’s been a year. I think I needed some downtime.”

“You always have needed to debrief after too many changes.”

“And you always wanted to party. Things have changed, but in a good way.”

They chatted a few more minutes, and he again assured his sister he was fine. Before he could end the call, the office door opened and Cara walked in unannounced.

“Aidan, I need to talk to you—”

Wincing, he put a finger to his lips.

Annabelle gasped. “Aidan Castle, do you have a woman there with you?”

He wouldn’t lie, but he had to protect Cara’s privacy, too.
